Duffy’s is a quintessential neighborhood Irish pub and a Staten Island institution since 1985. The green awning out front boldly claims "Staten Island’s Best Burgers," and for those looking for a reason to take the trip to the forgotten borough, this is it. It’s the kind of place where the grill has decades of seasoning, and the windowless front wooden door leads to a narrow, cozy space where the regulars are part of the architecture.
The Burger: Cheeseburger (Tier 2). Served on an English muffin with your choice of cheese (yellow American, Swiss, mozzarella, bleu, cheddar/Monterey). The hallmark here is the toasted English muffin that provides a sturdy, nooks-and-crannies texture that does a superior job of catching the salt and fat from the flame-broiled patty. And the cheese execution is like no other - three slices are used across the patty and each side of the muffin. Cooked to a juicy medium rare, and with that much cheese, condiments are a complete afterthought. While I went for the straight meat-cheese-bun combo, a raw onion addition is my move for next time.
Pro Tip: Come hungry, as they have a great full pub menu. If you aren't on the "English muffin train," they have plenty of other bun options to build your own.
The Occasion & Vibe: Dive. The décor is anchored by a green hue, tin ceilings, wood-paneled walls, and tile floors. This is a true community-focused hub where the air is thick with locals and the hum of friendly conversation. Keep an eye on the narrow rectangular window in the kitchen, where the food rests briefly before reaching its final destination. And this pub is more than just what’s on the inside - the back patio is a pleasant surprise that’s the perfect escape during nice weather, offering a multidimensional element to this already awesome spot.
Location: Staten Island, Forest Avenue.
