Tucked away on MacDougal Street, the original Emmett’s is a laid-back neighborhood staple bringing a taste of Chicago to the Big Apple. Simply put, it’s the kind of spot you go to when you just want to eat well, as owner Emmett fills the menu with his personal favorites to ensure every dish hits the mark. This philosophy makes it one of the most reliable spots in the city, delivering a welcoming environment and an amazing burger.
The Burger: The Burger (Tier 1). Pickles, onion, dijonnaise, and your choice of cheddar, mozzarella, or American cheese on a brioche bun. Cooked over an open flame to a perfect medium-rare, every element of this burger competes for your attention from the first bite. The meat is rich and carries an incredible funk from the flame, perfectly complemented by a creamy, tangy dijonnaise and American cheese. The bun is buttery and incredibly soft (steamed maybe?), elevating what appears to be a simple build into a complex masterpiece. Everything together complements perfectly, practically melting in your mouth. You have choices here, and choose wisely: American is the cheese, chips over fries as the side, and while the onions and pickles are presented for you to place, leave them where they lie.
Pro Tip: Pizza, pizza, pizza - the tavern-style thin crust is dynamite, and the deep dish is so high-quality it will make a believer out of even the biggest deep-dish skeptic (myself included). Also, round out your order with their go-to mozzarella sticks.
The Occasion & Vibe: Dive. A quintessential local NYC haunt with an unpretentious atmosphere and plenty of regulars. It feels like a dark cave (especially when it’s bright outside), making it a perfect retreat for a serious meal. Take note, this is a cozy spot with limited tables and bar seats. Because diners are often settled in waiting for deep-dish pizzas, they aren't "in and out," so planning ahead with reservations or getting there right when they open is essential.
The Location: Greenwich Village. MacDougal Street & Houston Street.
Bonus Thought: Beyond this staple, there are other variations on the menu to consider: the Blues Burger (blue cheese-stuffed patty, caramelized onions) and the Char Cheddar Burger (sharp cheddar cheese spread, caramelized onions, sport peppers, relish, tomato, ketchup & mustard).
