A 1950’s vibe, laminate countertops, Greek coffee cups, and plastic baskets covered with green checkered wax paper - all the right signs for a proper burger.
The Burger: Charlotte’s Special (Tier 3). Served with “lots of fried onions,” pickles, American cheese, and Charlotte’s sauce on a toasted potato roll. Piping hot onions are piled on, adding richness and sweetness to this burger.
Pro Tip: A single patty is the move, and you can add a number of toppings like bacon and hot cherry peppers. Their onion rings are great, and their “sidewinder” fries have a nice blend of crispiness on the exterior and a fluffy, piping-hot interior. I enjoyed the snappy dog, and patty melt’s supposed to be great, too. Order at the kiosk.
The Occasion & Vibe: At The Counter. Lovely’s offers up a traditional 1950’s feel with their narrow setting that puts your counter seat smack in the middle of the wall and the griddle. There’s something nostalgic about being that close to the action that’s tougher to find nowadays. They have about 10 counter seats and sometimes outdoor tables on the sidewalk. You can also take it to go.
The Location: Hell’s Kitchen, 9th Avenue & 45th Street.
