Luger’s. Is there a New York burger with more lore than this one? An iconic institution steeped in nostalgia and hype, still serving one of the city’s best burgers - and much more.
The Burger: Cheeseburger (Tier 2). Luger-Burger. USDA Prime, over ½ lb. on a Bun. This thing is rich, fatty, and full of flavor. The patty is incredibly plump (easily two inches thick), broiled to a crusty perfection with a tender, dry-aged flavor profile. It’s anchored by a thick slice of raw white onion and hugged together by a fresh sesame seed bun, crisp on the outside and airy within. Two generous slices of American cheese—if you choose to add them—melt over the top, enveloping the patty in a creamy layer that pulls the whole thing together. The whole thing comes together in a remarkably compact, structured package, crowned with a pink cow skewer to mark your chosen temperature.
Pro Tip: Cash or debit card only. Burgers are served only until 4 PM, but you can still order them via DoorDash all day. Without a reservation, you can walk into the bar or show up around 2–3pm, and there’s a good chance you’ll snag an available table. The cheese is a debatable addition for such high-quality meat, but I think it’s the move - super melty and plays beautifully with every element. The bacon\\on the other hand, is best enjoyed on the side. It’s over half an inch thick, great flavor, perfectly crisp, not chewy.
The Occasion & Vibe: Lunch Only. Classic old-school steakhouse energy. Bow-tied waiters, wood-paneled charm, and the sound of the J train rumbling across the Williamsburg Bridge (visible from one of the dining rooms) set the tone.
The space spans three dining rooms and a bar, with a newly renovated private room upstairs. There’s a real buzz in the air - families, regulars, and tourists all leaning in over coveted steakhouse classics. Bright natural light pours through big windows, adding a quiet elegance to a space that’s unmistakably New York.
The Location: Williamsburg, Broadway & Driggs Avenue.
